Large formats and industry challenges

On the year 2020 the trend emerged during the last 10 years, spear pointed by certain number of high-end companies has consolidated and is a staple on the ceramic industry

Larger formats, not anymore only at reach of the top-level producers, is now mainstream, manufactured by almost every tile producer in the market.

Manufacturers selling at more competitive prizes have closed the gap, offering impressive products in the middle ranges, with large formats and extremely light and thin but durable tiles.

The current trends are focused on muted down, natural tones, plank formats, imitation of stones, wood veneers and cements.
Large, rectangular formatting have been demanded by the market and interior designers for years, but prizes and technologies were not as widely available as they are now.

The natural consequence of such growth in size is reduction of tile thickness, sleek, highly technical in appearance tiles are the norm on the industry, giving the appearance of sophisticated and technically sound products.

In the last 10 years a reduction of more than 50% of thickness and more than 300% increase in size has transform the industry and pushed the limits of what is possible in the tile ceramic production.

Larger sizes go hand to hand with thickness reduction for economic reasons, in order to produce large sizes with reduced thickness is absolutely necessary to increase mechanical strength by changing body formulation or using high quality binder additives.

After several years of recession, local ceramics and tile manufacturers have been forced to improve their productivity, energy saving and cost reduction. Flexibility and fast adaptation are demanded by the current market necessities.

European markets have consolidated and matured the larger sizes trend, so larger and thinner formats are confirmed to be a new standard on the industry.

Even more technical solutions need to be developed by the industry, Acrilatos works hard to help ceramic producers to keep costs down, pushing the industry forward, always looking for advanced technical solutions in order to improve competitivity and decrease manufacturing costs.
